Day Hike · Talim Island, Binangonan, Rizal

Mt Tagapo day hike from Manila, on Talim Island

A mountain in the middle of a lake. You drive to Binangonan, take a boat an hour or so across Laguna de Bay to Talim Island, and climb 438 metres to a summit with water on every side. The boat is not a detail to get past; it is half the reason to go.

Is Mt Tagapo right for you?

Tagapo is rated 2 out of 9 and takes two to two and a half hours, so the walking is well within reach of a beginner. What makes the day is the structure of it: a lake crossing, an island with its own barangays, and a 360-degree summit over the largest lake in the Philippines. Nothing else we run is shaped like this.

Where the day starts

Jump-off is Barangay Janosa, Talim Island, Binangonan, Rizal. We collect you in Metro Manila, drive out, register the group and hand you over to an accredited local guide. A Trouvaille Diaro coordinator stays with you all day.

What the trail is actually like

Getting there is the tripBoats leave from Pritil Port in Binangonan and the crossing takes an hour to an hour and a half, stopping at island barangays on the way. It is a working ferry, not a tourist boat, and that is what makes it worth doing.
The climbFrom Barangay Janosa the trail is class 1 to 2 and takes two to two and a half hours. Forest for the middle stretch, which is a relief on an island with no high ground to shade it.
The summit, in every directionLaguna de Bay all around, fish pens laid out across the water, ferries crossing below you, the Makati and Taguig towers on the horizon, the Pililla windmills on the eastern ridge, and Makiling and the Cristobal-Banahaw range to the south.

Permits, guides and what they cost

The environmental fee is ₱50 per person and the guide ₱500 for a group of up to five. Boat fares are separate and included in your rate along with everything else.

Fees change, and we would rather say so

Barangay and DENR fees are set locally and revised without much notice. The figures above were correct when this page was written. Whatever they are on your date, they are inside the rate you were quoted, and we absorb the difference rather than asking you for more at the trailhead.

Questions hikers ask about Mt Tagapo

Is Mt Tagapo in Rizal or Laguna?

Rizal. Talim Island sits in Laguna de Bay, which is the source of the confusion, but the island belongs to Binangonan in Rizal province. The lake is named Laguna; the island is not in it.

How do you get to Talim Island?

By boat from Pritil Port in Binangonan, about an hour to an hour and a half across Laguna de Bay with stops at island barangays. We handle the fares and the timing, which matters because the return boats thin out in the afternoon.

Is Mt Tagapo suitable for beginners?

Yes, rated 2 out of 9 and two to two and a half hours up, making it one of the easiest in the collection. The length of the overall day is the thing to plan for, not the climb, because the boat adds up to three hours of travel on top of the drive.

What happens if the lake is rough?

Boats do not cross Laguna de Bay in bad weather, and that call is made by the boatmen rather than by us. If the crossing is cancelled you move to another date or take the credit, exactly as with any weather cancellation.

If this one is not quite right

We run several day hikes out of Manila and they suit different people. These two sit closest to this trip.
