Day Hike · Rodriguez, Rizal

Mt Balagbag day hike from Manila

The closest real mountain to Metro Manila. An hour and a half from the city, an hour and a half to the top, and from the summit you look straight back at the skyline you left: Ortigas, Makati, the whole sprawl, with the Sierra Madre behind you.

Is Mt Balagbag right for you?

Balagbag is rated 3 out of 9 and the trail is mostly a wide track rather than a footpath, which is why mountain bikers use it as much as hikers do. It is the shortest drive of any mountain we run, so if your group has a hard stop in the afternoon or someone is nervous about a long day, this is the one that fits. The trade-off is that it is not a dramatic mountain. It is a pleasant one with a remarkable view of the city.

Where the day starts

Jump-off is Sitio Balagbag, Barangay San Isidro, Rodriguez, Rizal. We collect you in Metro Manila, drive out, register the group and hand you over to an accredited local guide. A Trouvaille Diaro coordinator stays with you all day.

What the trail is actually like

The trackAsphalt at first, then sand, packed earth and rock. It is wide enough to walk two abreast most of the way, which makes conversation possible in a way that a single-file trail does not. The gradient is steady rather than steep.
Fully exposed grasslandThere is almost no shade from the jump-off to the summit. On a clear morning that is the point, because it is what gives you the view the whole way up. By eleven it is punishing. The early start is not for traffic alone.
What you seeMetro Manila laid out below with Ortigas Center and the Makati towers picked out, the Sierra Madre running north behind you, and on a clear day Mt Arayat far off to the northwest and the Laguna province hills to the south.

Permits, guides and what they cost

Day-hike registration is ₱60 per person and the guide ₱500 for a group of up to five. A guide is required even though the path to the summit is straightforward. Both are included in your rate.

Fees change, and we would rather say so

Barangay and DENR fees are set locally and revised without much notice. The figures above were correct when this page was written. Whatever they are on your date, they are inside the rate you were quoted, and we absorb the difference rather than asking you for more at the trailhead.

Questions hikers ask about Mt Balagbag

Is Mt Balagbag good for a first hike?

It is one of the two gentlest in the collection, alongside Mt Manalmon. Three out of nine, an hour and a half to two hours up on a wide track. The honest catch is the complete lack of shade, so it is a question of heat tolerance more than fitness.

Can you see Manila from Mt Balagbag?

Yes, and it is the reason to go. The summit looks straight back at the metro, with Ortigas and the Makati skyline visible on a clear morning. Haze builds through the day, so early matters.

Why is Mt Balagbag popular with cyclists?

The route is a wide, rideable track rather than a footpath, so mountain bikers use the same trail. Expect to share it, particularly at weekends. Your guide will keep the group to one side where it narrows.

How long is the drive from Manila?

About an hour and a half, the shortest of any mountain we run. That is what makes it the right pick when a group cannot give up the whole day.

If this one is not quite right

We run several day hikes out of Manila and they suit different people. These two sit closest to this trip.

Mt ManalmonGentler still, with a river crossing and caves
Mt Daraitan and Tinipak RiverThe serious end of the same Sierra Madre range
