Mt Sembrano day hike from Manila

Is Mt Sembrano right for you?

Sembrano earns its place on the view, which is arguably the widest of any day hike from Manila. Rated 3 out of 9, so no harder than Talamitam or Balagbag on paper, but longer: two and a half to four hours up rather than under two. That extra time is what gets you somewhere with a genuine sense of height over the lake.

Where the day starts

Jump-off is Barangay Hall of Malaya, Pililla, Rizal. We collect you in Metro Manila, drive out, register the group and hand you over to an accredited local guide. A Trouvaille Diaro coordinator stays with you all day.

What the trail is actually like

The approachFrom the Malaya barangay hall the trail climbs through farmland and then grassland. It is a longer walk than most of the Rizal hikes and the middle section is steady rather than steep, which suits people who would rather grind than scramble.
The view, and the best time for itLaguna de Bay fills the west with Talim Island in the middle of it. Behind you the Sierra Madre, south-west Mt Makiling, south the Banahaw trilogy, and north Mt Arayat on a clear day. Sembrano is one of the few mountains here that is often said to be better in late afternoon light than at sunrise.
The Pililla windmillsThe wind farm on the ridge above Pililla is visible from much of the trail and sits on the way back. If your group wants a stop on the drive home, that is the obvious one and we can build it in.

Permits, guides and what they cost

Registration and the local guide are paid at the Malaya barangay hall and are included in your rate. We settle them for the group at the start of the day.

Fees change, and we would rather say so

Barangay and DENR fees are set locally and revised without much notice. The figures above were correct when this page was written. Whatever they are on your date, they are inside the rate you were quoted, and we absorb the difference rather than asking you for more at the trailhead.

Questions hikers ask about Mt Sembrano

How hard is Mt Sembrano?

Three out of nine, the same rating as Talamitam and Balagbag, but a longer day: two and a half to four hours up against under two for those. If you have done one of the short Rizal or Batangas hikes and want the next step without a jump in technical difficulty, this is it.

What can you see from the summit of Mt Sembrano?

Laguna de Bay with Talim Island in it, the Sierra Madre, Mt Makiling to the south-west, the Banahaw trilogy to the south and Mt Arayat to the north on a clear day. It is one of the widest views of any day hike from Manila.

Can we visit the Pililla windmills on the same trip?

Yes, they sit on the route home and make a natural stop. Say so when you book and we will plan the timing around it.

Is sunrise or afternoon better on Sembrano?

Unusually for a Philippine day hike, many regulars prefer the late afternoon here for the light over the lake. Our standard departure targets the morning for heat and traffic reasons, but tell us if you would rather go later and we will quote it.

If this one is not quite right

We run several day hikes out of Manila and they suit different people. These two sit closest to this trip.
