Day Hike · Nasugbu, Batangas

Mt Batulao day hike from Manila

Eight hundred and eleven metres of open ridgeline an hour and a half south of Metro Manila, with numbered peaks you tick off one by one and Taal Lake on the horizon. Batulao is the mountain most Manila hikers climb first, and the one they bring friends back to.

Is Mt Batulao right for you?

Batulao is rated 4 out of 9 on the Pinoy Mountaineer scale, which puts it just past beginner without demanding anything technical. What makes it the standard first mountain is the shape of the trail: a long open ridge with numbered peaks, so you always know how far you have come and how much is left. That turns out to matter enormously for someone who has never done this before.

Where the day starts

Jump-off is Evercrest Golf Course, Nasugbu, Batangas. We collect you in Metro Manila, drive out, register the group and hand you over to an accredited local guide. A Trouvaille Diaro coordinator stays with you all day.

What the trail is actually like

The two trails, and which one you wantBatulao has an Old Trail on the east side and a New Trail on the west, meeting at a fork. The Old Trail takes an hour and a half to two hours from the fork, runs through woodland and past numbered campsites, and saves its steepest work for the end. The New Trail is quicker at an hour to an hour and a half and spends more time in forest. Most groups go up one and down the other, which is why you will hear people call it a traverse.
The assaultThe final sections hit 60 to 70 degrees. It is a scramble rather than a climb, with rock and root to hold, but it is the part that makes people’s legs shake on the way down. Trail shoes with real grip matter here more than anywhere else on the route.
What you see from the topCalatagan peninsula to the southeast, the Nasugbu coastline to the east, Mt Talamitam to the east-northeast, and on a clear morning Taal Lake and Balayan Bay. Early is better, because the haze builds through the day.

Permits, guides and what they cost

Registration runs ₱20 per trail if you are passing through and ₱30 if camping. Guides cost ₱300 to ₱400 a day. Both are included in your rate and we settle them at the registration desk.

Fees change, and we would rather say so

Barangay and DENR fees are set locally and revised without much notice. The figures above were correct when this page was written. Whatever they are on your date, they are inside the rate you were quoted, and we absorb the difference rather than asking you for more at the trailhead.

Questions hikers ask about Mt Batulao

How hard is Mt Batulao really, for a first mountain?

Rated 4 out of 9, so a step past beginner. The walking itself is manageable for anyone reasonably fit, and the honest difficulty is the final assault at 60 to 70 degrees, plus the descent, which is where unprepared knees complain. If you walk regularly you will be fine. If you have never hiked, Mt Manalmon is the gentler place to start and we will say so.

Old Trail or New Trail?

We usually go up the New Trail and down the Old, which gives you the quicker ascent while you are fresh and the longer, gentler descent when you are tired. If your group wants the classic ridge-walk experience in full we reverse it. Tell us and we plan it your way.

Can we see Taal Lake from the summit?

On a clear morning, yes, along with Balayan Bay and the Nasugbu coast. Haze builds through the day, which is one of the reasons the departure is as early as it is.

Is there water on the trail?

There are sari-sari stores on the way up selling water and buko, and we also carry bottled water for the group. Bring a refillable bottle of at least a litre anyway; the ridge is fully exposed and there is almost no shade.

If this one is not quite right

We run several day hikes out of Manila and they suit different people. These two sit closest to this trip.
