Mt Talamitam day hike from Manila

Six hundred and thirty metres of grassland above Nasugbu, up in under two hours and down in one. Cattle and horses graze the slopes, the last pitch goes up through shoulder-high talahib at sixty degrees, and from the top you can pick out Batulao, Makiling and Pico de Loro.

Is Mt Talamitam right for you?

Talamitam is the shortest real mountain in this collection and the one we recommend when a group has mixed fitness. Rated 3 out of 9, an hour and a half to two hours up, an hour down. Nobody is on the trail so long that it stops being fun, and the summit still feels earned because of how steeply it finishes.

Where the day starts

Jump-off is Sitio Bayabasan, Barangay Aga, Nasugbu (KM 83). We collect you in Metro Manila, drive out, register the group and hand you over to an accredited local guide. A Trouvaille Diaro coordinator stays with you all day.

What the trail is actually like

The river and the grasslandThe trail crosses the Talamitam river early on, by bridge. After that it is open grassland almost the whole way, which means sun from start to finish. There is essentially no shade on this mountain and that is the thing to plan around.
The cattleCows and horses graze these slopes freely and they are not pets. They can be territorial, particularly around calves. Your guide will route the group around them; the rule is simply not to walk between an animal and its young.
The final sixty degreesThe last push goes up through dense talahib grass on roughly a sixty-degree slope. It is short, it is steep, and it is the only part that will have you using your hands. From the top: Batulao to the southeast, Mt Makiling inland, Pico de Loro to the west and the Lubang islands out to the southwest on a clear day.

Permits, guides and what they cost

Registration and the local guide are paid at the Barangay Aga jump-off and are included in your rate. We settle them for the group so nobody is counting out cash at the start of the day.

Fees change, and we would rather say so

Barangay and DENR fees are set locally and revised without much notice. The figures above were correct when this page was written. Whatever they are on your date, they are inside the rate you were quoted, and we absorb the difference rather than asking you for more at the trailhead.

Questions hikers ask about Mt Talamitam

Is Mt Talamitam good for a first hike?

It is one of the two we recommend most often for a first mountain, alongside Mt Manalmon. Three out of nine, under two hours up, an hour down. The honest warning is the last stretch, which is steep enough to surprise people, and the complete absence of shade.

Are the cows on Mt Talamitam dangerous?

They are livestock grazing on an open mountain rather than a hazard as such, but they can be territorial around calves and they are large. Your guide keeps the group at a distance. Do not walk between a cow and its calf and you will have no trouble.

Can you combine Mt Talamitam with another mountain?

Yes. Talamitam and the neighbouring Mt Apayang are often done together in a day, and Batulao sits close enough to pair over a weekend. Ask us and we will quote the combination.

How do I prepare for the heat?

Start early, which our departure time already does. Bring at least a litre and a half of water, a hat and sunscreen, and a long-sleeved layer you can actually hike in. The talahib grass at the top cuts, so covered arms help there too.

If this one is not quite right

We run several day hikes out of Manila and they suit different people. These two sit closest to this trip.

Mt BatulaoThe longer Nasugbu classic, forty minutes further up the same road
Mt ManalmonThe gentlest option in the collection, good for families
